| Scaphiopus holbrookii |
| Spadefoot "toads" are characterized by an elongated, sickle-shaped spade on each hind foot; the spade is used for digging. Spadefoots spend most of their time buried in sandy or loose soil, but emerge during heavy rains to breed in temporary pools. Their voice is a loud, terse grunt that is low pitched and short. It is said to sound like a young crow. |
