| Garter snakes are one of the most common of snakes. Found in a variety of habitats, they are often the first snake a child sees and catches. Garters, due to their small size, are quick to heat up and cool down. Like most reptiles, garters warm up by basking in the sun. It may be on a rock or perhaps on a branch overhanging water. Garter snakes, like all snakes, are carnivorous. Their diet consists of almost any creature that they are capable of overpowering: insects, slugs, snails, earthworms, leeches, lizards, amphibians, baby birds, and small rodents. |
