They are most often seen basking on rocks, stumps, or brush. The coloration of this species is very variable. A typical pattern is a tan or brown background with a series of very broad black or dark brown bands on the back and sides. The diet of these aquatic snakes consists mainly of various small-sized fish, frogs, toads and salamanders.
